The wine cellar is part of a charming landscape, with its olive trees and vineyards, near the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento. A fertile land and an ideal microclimate for the production of high-quality grapes.
The vineyards partly belong to the coast and partly to hilly area
Favara lies on a slight slope with three hills ate its back. Its name derives from the Arabic “Rohal-Fewwar, meaning “plenty of water” and through time its name first turned into Fabaria and then into Favara.
The Castle of Chiaramonte is the main building in Favara. According to the historians it was built by Federico II of Chiaramonte in 1270 and it is located in the northwest side of Cavour Square.
Molecular studies have shown that the Grillo vine is the fruit of the combination of white Catarratto and Zibibbo or the Muscat of Alessandria. The origin of this vine is supposed to be attributed to baron Mendola of Favara (1828-1908), who combined several vines before obtaining the Grillo variety. At the end of the 19th century baron and agronomist Antonio Mendola begun to dedicate its studies to vines. Among the documents there is the birth certificate of the Grillo vine, which dates back to 1874. Baron Mendola used artificial insemination to obtain this vine in his vineyard located in Piana dei Peri, Favara, exactly where our vineyards are today.
